about coming to terms with not being right for someone

Greta Jaime - A Better Kind

“A lot of the time it’s easier to tell one side of the story and blame someone else when things don’t work out. In this song, I wanted to do the opposite and write about coming to terms with not being right for someone and realising you’re not in a position to give them exactly what they’re looking for.”

Within the opening bars of ‘A Better Kind’ Greta Jaime’s sparse keyboard lines house a latent grandeur, which she develops through four minutes of some of the most confident pop writing to come from an emerging artist in a while. Replete with huge and explosive vocal hooks and R&B tinged percussive grooves, 'A Better Kind’ channels the heady heartache that comes with acceptance over a failed relationship. Penned and produced solely by Jaime, the song crescendos to a blistering climax: syncopated hip hop hi-hats underpin a skygazing solo reminiscent of St Vincent, making for a vital piece of contemporary pop perfection. 'A Better Kind’ is the sound of an enchanting new pop artist following her instincts, a genuinely standout moment in Greta’s growing (and glowing) discography. (press release)

that focuses on the darker, more destructive side of love

Chavez Cartel - Love On The Run

Chavez Cartel return with the release of their new single ‘Love On The Run’, the first track to drop from their forthcoming sophomore EP titled ‘Confidence Is All I’m Taking Home’.

Staying true to their signature grungy alt rock sound, Love On The Run is filled with gloomy vocals, slick guitar riffs and tight rhythmics with drumming resonant to that of a marching band.

With bold lyrics ‘Feel me pin you in a vein and shoot you up through my arm’, Love On The Run is a slightly twisted and deranged love song that focuses on the darker, more destructive side of love. It represents unexpectedly falling in love during a time and in a place that you probably shouldn’t be.

Love is like an addiction. It can take us through the highest of highs, feeling on top of the world and as though nothing can stop us to the lowest of lows, bringing out the harshest and ugliest side of ourselves and yet we still can’t seem to escape it; we keep coming back for more no matter how toxic it can be for our mentality.

Love On The Run is the ideal track to transition from the preceding EP ‘Lucky Lucky’ to the new era of Chavez Cartel with the addition of Josh Kemp on Rhythm Guitar in the mix; joining existing members Ben Simpson (Vocals), Jack Kelly (Guitar), Calvin Brillus (Bass) and Tom Isaacs (Drums). Chavez Cartel uphold their loyalty to ARIA award winning producer Govinda Doyle. (press release)

about the heartbreak and confusion that comes with leaving a relationship

WILDES - Stay

The good, the bad & the outrightly confusing is tackled on WILDES’ new song, Stay.

WILDES explains in more detail “Stay is a song about the heartbreak and confusion that comes with leaving a relationship. As soon as you’ve made up your mind, memories come flooding back that suddenly make you unsure. Stay is about the difficulty of weighing up the good and the bad, the wrong and the right in someone, to the point when you just don’t know anymore. We’re all helpless, it’s our hearts that are in control.”

WILDES is gearing up towards releasing her first record, that gives attention to the imperfect beauty in the world around us, told via exceptional detail in songwriting. This hasn’t gone unnoticed by the legendary Bob Dylan, who invited her to his last London headline.  It’s partly worts-and-all, but it’s also a celebration of our innate condition. Neatly put by herself “These songs are a study on relationships - of my own, of my friends and loved ones. The emotional turmoil that goes hand in hand with any investment of the heart; the addiction, the fear, but also the lessons we learn and the love we receive along the way. Through writing, I ended up examining my own feelings, my irrationality and my friendships” (press release)

about the importance of sincerity and communication in a relationship

Danny George - Sincerity

Summer ’19 has been a fruitful period for UK producer Danny George. After uprooting to Berlin, a shift in perspective has spawned a bunch of new tunes and musical inspiration. With his new single ‘Sincerity’ he also announces his debut EP entitled ‘Crushed Comfort’ which will surface early next year – with more new music to follow before the end of 2019.

Sincerity is George at his genre-bending best, blending soul and electronica with nods to 90’s R&B and indie rock. The vocal, dripping with soul and honesty reflects the track’s themes of sincerity and openness, whilst the production is a lovingly put together mix of live and electronic samples. Explaining the inspiration behind the song, Danny explains:

“The lyrics centre around the importance of sincerity and communication in a relationship. This can be a romantic relationship between two people or something completely different. The idea is that by not being sincere to yourself or a partner, your ideals are clouded, you are translucent and a ghostly image to the other person.“ (press release)

addressing millennial anxiety and loneliness

Alex Bayly - Lonely Michael

Following the release of his latest single ‘I’ll Never Leave You’ which saw support from notable US site EARMILK, and DIY Magazine, for whom Bayly played a sold out single launch show at London’s Two Tribes Brewery, Alex Bayly returns with his new single ‘Lonely Michael’.

From his forthcoming debut album Ley Lines, ‘Lonely Michael’ is an upbeat British indie guitar affair. The opening harmonised loop gives way to an upbeat jangly groove, which intentionally contrasts the lyrics subject matter which address millennial anxiety and loneliness. The lyrics also reference 90s britpop songs such as the Manic Street Preachers ‘Motorcycle Emptiness’, which had an important influence on Bayly.

“Imitation body snatchers taking hold, of lonely michael, lonely michael’s in his head, it’s alright to be in your head”

This song gives an insight into the mind of Bayly at its most tumultuous with the track building to the ‘heaviest’ part of his forthcoming album with a distorted layered guitar riff coming in at three minutes, which would not be out of place from a Fugazi cut. (press release)

Some videos have been released for tracks previously featured on Find A Song:

Kelsy Kater - Liquor Store On Mars

“The song is a metaphor for finding a way to get over a broken heart. Escaping to mars was my way of getting through that. In the video I crash-land back on earth, representing the reality that you can’t runaway from your problems forever. Adam Slack, from The Struts, features in this video and my band are by my side as per usual. At the end of the video I watch my rocket ship fly back to mars, and with that I’m letting go of the pain.” (press release)

pizzagirl - ball’s gonna keep on rollin’

Pizzagirl delivers the audio visual treat he’s always dreamed of in the hilarious video for ‘ball’s gonna keep on rollin’’.

As he explains: “the sequel to my first timer movie anthology series takes place in the smoky lanes of that bowling alley you used to go to years ago! A made for TV, Rocky-esque sports battle of the millennium, starring corruption, redemption, Denise and introducing Pizzagirl like you’ve never seen her before! See you in there x”

Director, Tom Chetwode-Barton, further elaborates:

“For this video Pizzagirl had loads of really strong references ranging from the Big Lebowski to Twin peaks, so we took this and really ran with it - we wanted to create something camp, psychedelic and sort of nightmarish using tropes from all our favourite 80’s films, with a bit of slapstick thrown in for good measure.”
(press release)

Ryan Egan - Cruel Times

“The process was a spontaneous collaboration between myself and Yong Chen, a great visual artist from China, after meeting in NYC only 4 weeks ago.  We jumped right into shooting the video, myself shooting ambient night footage and Yong collecting various media images as well as my performance bits.  The 3 part vocal concept is meant to emphasize the different characters I performed as in the song, which may not be fully recognizable to the listener but it’s something I’m currently developing.  The video aims to show a world in chaos — the collective 'Cruel Times’ that we are facing as a global society forced to endure climate disaster and fascism reentering political life.” (press release)

Granfalloon - Objects of Love

With footage taken from the intimate launch night of his new album,
the video for ‘Objects of Love’ finds Granfalloon performing the latest single as a trio within the cosy confines of The Eagle Inn in Salford.

Showcasing the current live set-up that fans can expect to see on the current Granfalloon tour, the video also sees all three members on-stage wearing Red, Green, and Blue in reference to the new album title ‘RGB’; the three elements that together make up White Light.

A cerebral and serene offering that sets the tone for the wider album, the track features guest vocals from Liverpool star Natalie McCool. Expanding the track especially for the occasion, this new ‘Objects Of Love’ video sees the band add a lush, flowing extended introduction; something unheard on the album edit, but available to hear exclusively here for the first time.
(press release)

The Ghost Of Helags - The Santa Rosa Song

Independently directed and filmed by the dream pop duo in their newfound home of Berlin, the DIY video follows Teresa as she journeys through the city’s historical Eastside.

Speaking about the new video John Alexander Ericson of the band says:
“The video for ‘The Santa Rosa Song’ was shot just a couple of days ago walking down Frankfurter Allee in what used to be East Berlin, hence the Soviet Union-esque architecture. The video ends up in front of the twin towers at Frankfurter Tor.”

Filmed in a Super-8 video style, the new video offers a nostalgic and reflective accompaniment to the Scandinavian duo’s serene new single.  (press release)

about how connections can sometimes transcend physical loss

Lake Jons - Simone

With the upcoming release of their sophomore full-length ‘The Coast’, Lake Jons reconnect with their roots, leaving the city and delving into the viridescence of their moniker’s birthplace, the Towars forest. Thematically, the album is Jons’ endeavour to dismantle life, space and time. They present parts of rough instrumental parts, layering them with harmony-laden toplines, while each of the singles’ overall structure seems to assemble again seamlessly.

“There are all kinds of emotional releases when roaming in the nature far from civilisation,” Jooel Jons says in his short essay on the new album, “In a way ‘The Coast’ is an emotional perspective. There are times when you are simply stuck in that gateway. Looking forward to the oceans or backward to the mountains, you choose. Time is irrelevant as long as you’re moving and evolving. I believe that’s the essence.”

Jooel also talks a little about the new single ‘Simone’, he explains that the concept of the track is how connections can sometimes transcend physical loss; “You know the feeling someone close to you has moved on to another time and space? You’re still feeling these sensations of their presence and wonder if all is not lost after all. Maybe you’re in denial. But you’ll only know if you stop and try reaching out to something that only you sense. From feelings arise experience; that is vital to our feeling of existence.”

Musically, the new cut is a dusty haze of drum machines and lo-fi instrumentation. Jons’ vocal tones break the membrane of the guitar theshold, breaching the surface of the mix, while spectral arpeggios fill silences and late-naughties’ UK garage-esque bass parts dance to the close of the tune. that describes chasing fame in Los Angeles

Raynes - Lemon Drop

Raynes is a transatlantic trio made up of two Americans and a Brit. Now based in Los Angeles, Mat Charley and Joe Berger, both born and raised in North Dakota, met UK native Mark Race through Instagram after an extensive search for the final piece of this project. The geographically unlikely three combine their unique and complementary strengths to form an artistically authentic band, integrating elements of modern pop with classically Americana instrumentation. Their ability to blend pianos and synths, pounding drums and sophisticated vocals, and string arrangements with acoustic guitars and mandolins results in an impactful, one-of-a-kind style.

Raynes’ highly anticipated debut single ‘Lemon Drop’ showcases their distinct amalgamation of influences. Produced by Mighty Mike (Lana Del Rey, The Neighbourhood, Dua Lipa) and mastered by Joe LaPorta (David Bowie, Vampire Weekend, Shawn Mendes), the track features catchy melodies, violin riffs, and stacked vocal harmonies. Raynes share: “It’s been a fun challenge incorporating all of Mike’s pop expertise into our sound. We’ve had a blast figuring out how to make a violin sound like a synth and a snare sound like a hand clap, as well as blending it all together so it walks the line between folk and pop in the most appealing way.” ‘Lemon Drop’ describes chasing fame in Los Angeles and the tension between the sweet and the sour that comes with that. The trio confide, “It’s pretty fatalistic, but very tongue in cheek, as none of us are really planning on getting hooked on drugs or the adoration of fans or any of the other pitfalls that our parents and Hollywood itself warned us about.”

Sonically, the music is inspired by a myriad of different influences. Their sound has been compared to the arena-filling choruses of Coldplay, the Americana instrumentation of Mumford and Sons, and the harmonic complexity of the Beach Boys. Raynes call this inimitable fusion “expensive folk”––folk instrumentation which incorporates very obvious elements of pop production, ultimately creating a slicker and shinier sound than straight-down-the-middle folk. “Even with all of the more exotic or unusual components, it’s really just pop music at its core,” reveals the band.

There are recurring lyrical motifs running through the music of Raynes––heads and hearts, blood and bones, sugar and salt, sun and rain, and wine and water, among many others. There are also a number of musical ideas and elements that repeat in many of their songs, such as atmospheric synth tones, violin and mandolin counterpoints, and world-inspired percussion. But there’s not really one thematic throughline other than “the human condition” and all that comes with it––longing, confusion, cowardice and despair, but also joy, hope, growth, and of course love. Some songs are inspired by Bible stories, Greek myths, or historical events, and some are more personal, direct, and intimate. (press release)

about how we are constantly changing

Ro Begman - All We Are

‘All We Are’ is the perfect showcase for Bergman’s adept grasp of vocal expression, from aching melancholy to deep vulnerability, which guides the narrative of the track. Dark lyrical sentiments are balanced by gentle arrangements and considered melodies - rhythmic enough to draw one in, yet hypnotic enough to be lost their wide-open spaces. But what stands true on ‘All We Are’ is that Bergman can be at his most powerful when at his most soulful, and ‘All We Are’ is able to move the listener to a different plane with disarming ease.

Ro Bergman gives some insight into the track. “This is all we are - we are constantly changing. Try to stay above the shadows and keep the sun inside yourself.”  (press release)
